Sato Sakura Gallery New York aims to showcase the compelling beauty of contemporary Nihonga Japanese paintings to the people of the world through its establishment in New York -the world’s prominent capital of the arts.

Or organization specializes in the acquisition, preservation, and commercial evaluation of Nihonga works from Japanese painters born after the start of the Showa era (1926). We curate each of our exhibitions with care to exhibit post-war masterpiece works from our vast museum collection, alongside artwork from the greatest painters of our future generations. In doing so, we ensure that our guests are always able to experience the past, present, and the future of this rare and beautiful art form.

Our parent organization,Sato Sakura Museum- a world leader in Nihonga exhibition- was founded in October 2006 in Koriyama city, Fukushima prefecture. Following the opening of our second premier museum space in Meguro ward, Tokyo, Sato Sakura Museum has held a national competition -the ‘Ookasho’- to recognize future Nihonga masters. Winners of this prestigious award are chosen by a panel of both Sato Sakura Museum experts and top-ranking post-war masters, and are presented with the opportunity to have their works exhibited in our Museum alongside Japan’s greatest cultural treasures.

Our final expansion, Sato Sakura Gallery New York, opened its doors in September 2017.

It is our sincere hope that through our activities at Sato Sakura Art Museum in Tokyo and Sato Sakura Gallery New York, we will be able to provide a venue for people from around the world to appreciate and experience the allure and diversity of contemporary Nihonga painting.
