Kaori Someya was born in 1977 in Shimane prefecture. She graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1999. She was accepted for the first time into the 56th Spring In-ten Exhibition and the 86th In-ten Exhibition in 2001. The next year, she completed her master’s degree in Nihonga at the graduate school of Tokyo University of the Arts. She held her solo exhibition at Gallery Tomo in Ginza in 2005. She won the Minister of Justice Award for the work she entered in “Yuuga no Kai,” an exhibition of young Nihonga artists in 2007. She also received the Minister of Foreign Affairs Award and honorable mention for the work she entered in the Spring In-ten Exhibition in 2013. The next year, Someya won another honorable mention from the 2nd Ohka-sho, Annual Sakura Exhibition held at Sato Sakura Art Museum in Tokyo. Since May 2014, she has been drawing the cover picture of PR magazine’s “Monthly Report of National Personnel Authority.” Currently, she is a Tokutai rank member of Japan Art Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin) and a research assistant at Tokyo University of the Arts.
